Origin

Why and how was MAHJ-X created?

For some time now, the Mah Jongg community has been considering the element of luck in the game we love. Luck is something that players have absolutely no control over and yet it impacts the outcome of the game. I'm sure we've all experience luck not being on our side and the frustration this can lead to.

So, a group of experienced Mah Jongg enthusiasts came together to mull this issue over, to see if they could solve it. The aim was to find fun and innovative ways to play American Mah Jongg that are less dependent on luck and, therefore, more skill-based with increased strategic possibilities.

We believe MAHJ-X is the solution to this conundrum and are happy to offer this brand new version of American Mah Jongg to the community! MAHJ-X will appeal to those players who are open to trying something new and who enjoy a challenge.

The overall goal of MAHJ-X is to reduce player frustration and, therefore, improve the enjoyment of the game.

Rules

Below is a quick overview of MAHJ-X Rules. Click the buttons below for more details.

Each player begins with a joker.

All players start with thirteen tiles.

East deals the tiles.

All Charleston passes are blind or negotiated.

Jokers may be exchanged for natural tiles.

A discarded joker earns an extra pick.

Tiles may be added to or removed from exposures.

Consecutive runs may be played backwards.

A point-based scoring system is used.
